Su’s moonstone ring reminds her of her late Mum

Recently we spoke to Su, who was generous enough to share her reasons for coming to Eli Speaks for her custom ring design. Here she talks about the sentiment behind the design and her precious moonstone ring.

“My Mum, Heather passed away when she was just 60. She didn’t have, or wear, much jewellery, but what she did own was in a little crystal box of treasures on her dressing table. As a child I just loved the wondrous tangle of gold, silver and precious stones that tumbled out. There was a pair of small moonstone droplet earrings that always drew me in. I would hold them, fascinated. I loved the way they seemed almost clear at first, coming alive as I moved them in the light. Magical blue shards would flash and then disappear, dancing in the changing light. My Mum had sparkly dancing eyes, as blue as the sky. Her moonstone earrings flashed with the same colour. I loved watching her put them on and spotting those flashes of blue as she moved.

Sadly, sometime after I left home, Mum’s jewellery box was stolen and those little earrings were gone. I never saw moonstones like that again, until just after I turned 60 when I wandered into a little shop in Galle Fort, Sri Lanka. There it was, a gemstone just like the ones in Mum’s earrings, clear at first, then flashing blue in the moving light. I was taken straight back to that little box of tangled treasures on her dressing table, and to Heather, my beautiful Mum. I took it home with me.

I needed to keep that gem close to me in a special piece of jewellery. Kate was the only artisan for me. She is all about the creation of wearable art that captures and holds real meaning for the wearer. Kate made me the most exquisite ring that perfectly speaks my story. It’s simple and elegant, beautifully honouring the moonstone that flashes with the sky blue of Mum’s sparkling eyes. I wear my ring every day and it makes me smile… Mum and me, together again.”

Thanks, Su, we hope you love your ring as much as we enjoyed making it!
